The Hunt for Red October is one of the very few movies where, I feel, the movie is better than the book. Ramius in the book struck me as kind of an asshole, who was just generally pissed at the world. He had redeemable qualities, for sure. Then there's Sean Connery; he's the dad of the Soviet sub fleet, he knows how his submariner kids and his surface and airborne brothers will act and react.
Both are good, but Connery makes Ramius the imposing genius who was fucked by the system, and has since calmly and stoically plotted his glorious revenge.
